In the early morning rush-hour on the Monday before Christmas, air pollution campaigners from ‘Stop Killing Londoners’ staged a series of short roadblocks at exits from the main arterial Chiswick roundabout in south west London. Despite the brevity of the actions, traffic soon tailed back.

Drivers held up at the front of the queues were offered mince pies and were told the hold-up would be short. The action follows a series of various escalating protests over the past few months, and was a test to see how well the technique will work on a larger scale early next year. The intention is to attract media attention, and force Sadiq Khan to accelerate his plans to combat the dire state of London’s air and to meet with the campaigners, which he has so far refused to do.
