World Refugee Day is an opportunity to counter the billionaire-led demonisation of oppressed peoples, and acknowledge and honour the rich diversity of refugee communities and their value to society and human development.
Real Media first interviewed this young man in 2023, running from extreme religious persecution in a North African country. He was self-taught and then university-educated in English, hoping to find sanctuary in the UK, and wanting to integrate with and contribute to society. It seemed appropriate today to republish our original interview and find what life has thrown at him since.
Despite his strong claim, he discovered that there was simply no legal route into the UK, or any way for his claim to be properly considered, and so like many others, he had to place himself in the hands of people-smugglers.
His full interview exposed many myths, among them the claim that French police were doing little or nothing to stop the flow. He talked about his terrifying journey packed into a small boat with 30 others while an inexperienced helmsman headed the wrong way into the Atlantic. He explored the reasons migrants end up in the UK, and he talks about his experience of the ‘migrant hotels’.
Catching up with him recently we discover that in the three intervening years, this remarkable young man has completed a Masters degree at the business school of a top UK university, and has secured an internship at a major investment company. His contribution to our society has been wholly positive, but despite a new government and his obviously successful integration, he is still involved in a long appeal process following his denied asylum claim.
His original interview offered some solutions and reminded us that this government and its media allies, instead of punishing the victims, could begin addressing the root problems that tie in with so many other issues of democracy, exploitation and the climate crisis.
