Last weekend, the Media Reform Coalition (MRC) brought together independent and mainstream journalists, academics and campaigners, for the annual Media Democracy Festival.

This year, the Independent Media Association and the Public Interest News Foundation brought a strong independent presence to the event.

We’ll be bringing you more news and views from the day, but we start off with this short interview about the future of the BBC, with Tom Mills, MRC chair and author of ‘BBC: Myth of a Public Service’.

The MRC has campaigned hard to prevent the privatisation of Channel 4, and its BBC and Beyond manifesto and petition campaigns for a public broadcast corporation which is completely free from government interference and answerable to its citizens.

In this clip, Tom recognises people’s frustration with the current situation, but warns us not to throw the baby out with the bathwater, instead looking at the steps necessary to identify and address the institutional issues, so that we may reform the BBC.
