Chants of “Israel, USA, how many kids have you killed today?” rang out across Glasgow’s Buchanan Steps as a large crowd gathered in solidarity with the people of Iran.

Emergency demonstrations were held by Stop the War Coalition across Glasgow, Sheffield, Manchester and Bristol on Monday evening, calling for an end to US and Israeli aggression in Iran. Conflict has spread across the Middle East after Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was reportedly killed during strikes launched by the US and Israel on Saturday. The strikes were followed by a call from US President Donald Trump urging Iranians to overthrow their government.

Both the Prime Minister and Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney have not condemned the US and Israel’s attack on Iran, including the strike on a girls’ school in Southern Iran, which has been reported to have killed 165 people, including children and school teachers. A Stop the War Glasgow organiser said ‘don’t let Gaza be the template’ as Western powers continue to fuel war in the Middle East.

Legacy media report the US and Israel are targeting military and political sites, which now apparently include schools, in a bid to weaken the Islamic regime. But whose interests does this serve?
