Last week, activists from Stop JCB Demolitions, Parents 4 Palestine and South Asia Solidarity Group organised an occupation at the South Bank Centre to protest their sponsorship deal with JCB.
JCB equipment is routinely used as part of war crimes demolishing homes and infrastructure in the West Bank, Gaza and elsewhere.
As part of the protest, there was a poetry reading outside the Poetry Library which is served by a JCB-branded lift.
Among the readings was this piece, written in prison by one of Palestine Action’s “Filton 18”. The #Filton18 are expected to remain on remand without trial for more than a year for their alleged involvement in an action last August at Israeli weapons manufacturer Elbit System’s Bristol research facility.
One of the eighteen is Fatema Zainab Rajwani, a 20-year old media student at Goldsmith’s University, who friends describe as a kind, compassionate and caring individual driven by a passion for social justice. Here poem “To the People of Gaza” was written during her first month of imprisonment at Bronzefield prison. It was read both in English and Gujarati, with English and Arab subtitles. Here is the full Gujarati text:
હું ગાઝાના લોકો માટે પ્રેમ અને દુ:ખની સ્થિતિમાં લખી રહી છું. રાત્રે, હું એવા વિશાળ અને ઊંડા પ્રેમનું સપનું જોઉં છું કે તે આપણને બધાને મુક્ત કરી દે છે; તે મારા કથ્થઈ શરીર અને તમારા વચ્ચેની જગ્યા ભરવા માટે ખંડોમાં ફેલાય છે. હું ઈચ્છું છું કે હું જે પ્રેમનું સ્વપ્ન જોઉં છું તે પૂરતું હોત. હું ઈચ્છું છું કે જે પ્રેમનું હું સપનું જોઉં છું તે તમારા દુ:ખને એકત્રિત કરી શકે જેમ આપણું મૌન હિંસા એકત્રિત કરે છે.
જ્યારે લખવા માટે કંઈ જ નથી હોતું, ત્યારે હું પ્રેમ વિશે લખું છું. કારણ કે પ્રેમ વગર જીવન જીવવા લાયક નથી, અનુભવવાની કોઈ તાકાત નથી. એક એવો પ્રેમ છે જે તમને સાક્ષી આપવા માટે મજબૂર કરે છે, એક એવો પ્રેમ જે મૌન નથી રહેતો, એક એવો પ્રેમ જે ધૈર્યવાન કે દયાળુ નથી પરંતુ અવિરત અને કઠોર છે. હું એવા પ્રેમનું સપનું જોઉં છું કે તે દુ:ખ પહોંચાડે છે.
એક એવો પ્રેમ જે આપણને ઓછો ભયભીત નહીં પરંતુ એક પ્રેમ જે આપણને ઓછા સમાધાનકારી બનાવે છે. રાત્રે હું એક એવા પ્રેમનું સપનું જોઉં છું જે એટલો વિશાળ અને એટલો ઊંડો હોય છે કે જ્યારે પરોઢ પડે છે ત્યારે તે આપણને બધાને મુક્ત કરી દે છે.
હું એવા પ્રેમને અનુસરવાનું સપનું જોઉં છું જે નવો નહીં પણ જૂનો અને જૂનો અને માફ ન કરી શકાય તેવો હોય. જે પ્રકારનો પ્રેમ કાર્ય કરવા માટે ઊભો છે, તમે જાણો છો અને (જે નાશ કરે છે) અને તે બધી વસ્તુઓ કે જે (નવેસરથી બનાવી શકાય છે) સાથે સમાધાન ન કરે તેના કરતાં વધુ મોટું પ્રેમનું કાર્ય બીજું કોઈ નથી.
