On Saturday 17th October, climate and ecology activists ‘Extinction Rebellion‘, organised a further escalation of their protest actions, by blockading five central London bridges for many hours. Their aim was to disrupt the normal function of the city and bring attention to the urgency of scientists’ calls for a radical response to the crisis of climate change and mass extinction that is threatening the planet.
On Blackfriar’s Bridge, Christian Climate Action activists broke bail conditions placed on them following arrests earlier in the week, and they locked themselves together across the road, forcing police cutting specialists to work to free them, and lengthening the blockade duration to more than five hours.
Extinction Rebellion are planning greater disruption over the next few days, and a return to the bridges at the weekend.
