On Monday morning 12th Nov, Extinction Rebellion kicked off their civil disobedience climate campaign with a visit to the Department of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy.
Activists entering the staff entrance quickly glued themselves to the security barriers and then started spraying the ‘Extinction Symbol’ on windows and walls around the lobby. The atmosphere was calm, and as around a hundred protesters arrived at the other main entrance and took over the road, the building was shut down for several hours until specialist police teams freed the protesters.
This was the first day of action in a week building towards a blockade of five London bridges on Saturday 17th. Extinction Rebellion is demanding radical and swift government action on climate change and mass extinction in the wake of scientists’ alarm over the current state and the future survival of our planet. They are committed to non-violent civil disobedience to push for change.
