Massive meetings, protests planned, strikes happening and occupations occurring – Manchester is where it is happening right now (along with everywhere else in the UK – don’t worry, we know it’s happening everywhere!).

What follows is a press release from Free Education Manchester – after that we have details of what has happened and what’s coming up in Manchester.

Before that though… There is another protest that has been ongoing and needs people’s support. The homeless camp in Manchester City Centre is ongoing – no longer can the homeless be ignored.  Support with food, money, or just coming down for chat.

***30 students in occupation at University of Manchester

***Management refusing free access and food deliveries

On the afternoon of Wednesday May 14, approximately 30 students occupied the Harold Hankins building of the University of Manchester Business School. This space is in the process of being developed from university buildings into a £50million hotel and “executive education centre”.

The occupation is taking place in light of the prospect of five more years of a Tory government, who have made it clear they intend on continuing their aggressive cuts to education and the welfare state, and have refused to rule out another increase in tuition fees.

Manchester management have since refused food and free access into the building and have brought police to the building in a bid to intimidate the occupiers.

Naomi Wilkins, a final year music student, said:

“The University of Manchester, who like to present themselves as progressive, have been restricting their students’ right to protest by preventing deliveries of food to the occupation. Evidently they would rather let students starve than listen to our legitimate concerns.”

Jin Belles, who studies drama, said:

“We are occupying to reclaim space for educational ends. We want to see a system where learning isn’t burdened by the pressures of debt and profit, where the curriculum reflects diversity and radicalism. We are fighting for free higher education provision for everyone, funded by taxing the rich.”
